Cliff face surveys are part and parcel of the BCL
survey diet. This particularly picturesque survey was carried out by our
team in April and presented a number of challenges. The window of
opportunity was small with access only possible for two hours during the
lowest tides of the month.
We managed to carry out the survey of
the cliff base without even getting our feet wet!
Here we used the latest laser
technology, allowing for a very accurate +/-5mm survey of the cliff face
and other remote features, without having to access the steep and
dangerous cliff. The data provided to the engineers included the cliff
face, dip and strike of strata and location of vegetation. The
information was collated quickly and supplied to the engineers the
following morning.
High detail topographical surveys have been completed for ten major Auckland City parks.
This contract has involved (to date) topographical surveys of ten major Auckland City parks including Churchill Park and Onehunga Domain.
Key challenges of this project where logistic with tight timeframes and up to 15,000 survey points per park! A high level of attention to detail was needed in planning our survey schedule and close monitoring of key milestones and daily progress reports was all vital to achieving the successful outcome.
This work was carried out without incident, within the
timeframes agreed and within the budgets required.

This forty eight unit residential development in Albany creates a strong statement on the northern edge of the City.
BCL Surveyors had the lead survey role on this project, responsibilities included topographical survey, resource consents, setout of all structures (drainage, buildings, roading etc), asbuilts and Unit Title survey.
Key to the success of this project was the availability of our surveyors on an as required basis throughout the setout process. The fast pace of construction required setout of items to be carried out with little lead in time.
The client appreciated BCL’s ability to respond to pressure and ensure the construction teams had survey on demand.
In order to improve standards of practice, Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) has instigated an audit process of Licensed Cadastral Surveyors. BCL Surveyors was recently chosen to be audited, which provided a good opportunity to test our systems and processes against the LINZ and KPMG auditors’ expectations.
We are very proud to have passed with flying colours, and have a few comments to brag about! Here are a couple which come directly from the Audit Report:
BCL Surveyors have good quality control processes in place for the production andsubmission of complete and accurate CSDs.
…the Audit Team is impressed with the thoroughness of QA processes, and an evidentfocus on quality shown by members of the firm. We have no further recommendations or process improvement ideas and commend BCL Surveyors for their sound business practice.
Robust quality assurance practices are in place, including a comprehensive checklist which is completed and signed by a Licensed Cadastral Surveyor prior to lodgement ofCSD.
The Audit Team also noted the following observations and positive practices during the audit:
Good supervision of technicians and survey graduates.
Processes to maintain equipment including calibration are at a high level, including the development of an electronic register to monitor servicing due dates, regular manual checking of equipment using marks set out in the firm's car-park, and the retention of hard copy records.
A good level of preliminary planning performed, including preparation of an occupational diagram with highlighted marks to search for.
Regular team meetings are held with LCSs and field staff, which includes discussion of
technical issues and requisitions.
Field audits undertaken by the audit team found surveys to be well executed, and no items of non compliance were identified.
So what?
Our robust systems mean less risk to our clients, the company and the government (whom guarantee land titles).
Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) accreditation for
Geodetic Survey Service Provider has been attained by BCL Surveyors
opening the way for our team to carry out geodetic grade surveys
throughout New Zealand. In order to be eligible to bid for this
specialist work BCL Surveyors has had to prove that we have the skills
and processes in place to successfully complete the projects. In
particular we have demonstrated the ability to effectively utilise
geodetic grade GPS to the high tolerances that are required when working
on the countries survey framework. Our team look forward to building a
strong partnership with LINZ to ensure that our geodetic control system
remains amongst the best in the world.
BCL Surveyors purchase additional 12D survey software.
In line with our on going investment in advanced technologies this
purchase will significantly increase our ability to produce very high
quality surveys. In the past two years this Australian developed
software has taken the New Zealand survey industry by storm our early
involvement with the 12D team has allowed us to customise the GUI to our
exact specifications. The powerful processing engine in 12D allows us
to take full control of the huge volume of information that our field
teams are able to capture. Thus we are able to minimise risk and
maximise the quality and quantity of information that we provide to our
clients.
This complex $35M project containing more than 100 units is a landmark project on Onehunga Mall.
Our team has been involved from the beginning on this project and enjoyed seeing it progress through its various stages. Of particular interest on the site was the underground lava cave system that required attention early in the project.
Our team was entrusted with all survey matters on the project from start to completion. The ability to work with the many different professionals to ensure that all requirements were met was a key challenge on this long lasting project.
Our very good working relationship with the client, construction company, solicitors etc has ensured BCL Surveyors have remained a trusted partner throughout this project life span.
BCL Surveyors assists Auckland City Council in the
redevelopment of key cityscape. High detail digital surveys have been
undertaken for the Newmarket Broadway upgrade. BCL Surveyors night
survey capabilities allowed this very busy area to be surveyed with no
disruption to retail activity. The survey was carried out using a laser
system to a very high level of accuracy; the survey was completed,
processed and delivered well within the project timeframes.
With more than eighty units over seven levels, this challenging city fringe development was successfully completed in 2005.
Landplan entrusted the BCL team to carry out all survey functions on site from start to finish. Key deliverables were the topographical survey, full construction setout, asbuilts and Land Transfer Unit Title survey.
As with all apartment style developments the timely delivery of the completed Unit Title survey is critical to enable the release of funds at the end of the project. BCL was able to dedicate significant resources to this end and deliver the completed survey within project deadlines.
Our team was praised by Landplan for their dedication to the success of this development.
